Wood Stove Inserts: Stay Warm and Save Money!

Updated on March 12, 2015

Wood Fireplace Inserts are Warm, Inviting, and Save You Money!

Wood stove inserts are a smart investment for your home. The wood stoves do add charm and ambiance to your living room or den, especially on a cold winter's night. And the fire does encourage family and friends to gather around one central area. But, during this economic downturn that we are experiencing, more and more people are turning to wood stoves simply because of the money that is saved by burning wood as opposed to electric or oil heat.

The initial outlay of funds to purchase and install a wood stove are replaced within a short period of time after you start using the wood to heat your home. And if you live near a forested area, you have plenty of firewood to get started. Don't forget to check into the licensing/tagging requirements, though. Wood stove inserts also increase the efficiency of your traditional open hearth fireplace.

So, save some money this winter. Stop paying those huge oil bills. Add one of the many styles available to your home this winter.

Prevent your Heat from Going up the Chimney!

Wood Stove Inserts Increase Your Fireplace Efficiency

Ahhhh, sitting near the fireplace, feet propped up, favorite drink in hand. Perhaps you are enjoying the ambiance of the fire with your loved ones. Together you watch the red flames burning the wood. Together you watch the heat escape up the chimney.

Oops, what?

That's right. Traditional fireplaces are great for atmosphere, but a large percentage of the heat generated from your burning logs literally goes up the chimney along with the smoke.

With the price of any home fuel, including wood, you want to burn as efficiently as you can. Many people are upgrading their open fireplaces to one of the many new models of wood stove inserts available today for that reason. They want to save fuel and money.

Wood stove inserts are great to have. You still get to enjoy the ambiance of having a fire, but a higher percentage of the heat goes into your home, not up the chimney. Add a blower or fan, and you can easily heat a modest sized home with the right model.

Today's Wood Stove Inserts Are Better for You and Your Family

The interior design of wood stoves has changed completely since the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the performance standards for new wood stoves in 1988. The emission limits of smoke from wood stoves has been changed to 7.5 grams of smoke per hour for non-catalytic stoves and 4.1 grams per hour for catalytic stoves. Certified stoves can reduce smoke emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional stoves, and are much more efficient.

According to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), if you have one of the wood stove inserts or wood stoves that are more than seven years old, consider replacing it with one of the newer, advanced combustion units.

The EPA-certified emission value can be compared from one model to another. Manufacturers of wood stove inserts have improved their combustion technologies. Some of the newer stoves have lowered their particulate emissions to the range of one to four grams per hour.

The newer certified wood stove inserts have features that promote the secondary combustion. Most of the features are designed to burn off the dangerous chemicals and toxic substances before they leave the firebox and enter your home.

This is achieved when:

  • The fire has an adequate supply of oxygen.
  • The gases from the fires are at high temperature and mixed with preheated air, specifically oxygen.
  • The gases have enough time to burn before they cool down.
